Disabled Subway Riders Praise NYC Transit Head For Access Improvements

Some of the most frequent critics of the subway system, disabled riders, saluted New York City Transit President Howard Roberts Wednesday night for his assistance in improving the system.

Disabled riders point to frequent elevator breakdowns and other problems with accessibility.

But, at a network reception hosted by the Disabled Riders Coalition, representatives praised Roberts, who took over as NYC Transit president four months ago, for being unusually responsive to their concerns.

Among other improvements, transit officials recently began posting elevator outages on the MTA website. And, earlier this year, Roberts took part in a ride-along with Disabled Riders Coalition President Michael Harris.

"I will do everything I possibly can to improve access to the point that people think back to these as 'the bad old days,'" said Roberts.

Roberts stuck around for about two hours to listen to disabled riders' concerns. :)
