Health Care for the 99%" solidarity march with Occupy Wall St., WED. OCT. 26, 4 p.m.
Dear Members, Supporters, and Friends:

Like many of you, we are all very inspired and excited by the new activism springing forth on many fronts from the “Occupy Together” movement (www.occupytogether.org) emerging across our state and nation and around the world. Everyday people from all walks of life and political persuasions are joining together and enthusiastically “taking it to the streets” to confront the abuses and ravages of the ongoing Great Recession, inequities of wealth and income, and corruption of democracy by economic and political elites.

Here in NYC, as part of the “Occupy Wall St.” (OWS) action taking place in lower Manhattan, a plethora of working groups have formed to take on various aspects and issues (www.nycga.net/groups/), among them “Health Care for the 99%” (www.nycga.net/groups/healthcare-for-all/) and the OWS Labor Support and Outreach Committee (www.nycga.net/groups/labor-support-outreach/)

Health Care for All New York (HCFANY), our statewide coalition, has also visited OWS to interview some occupiers, participants, and supporters about their health care needs and concerns. You can view them on HCFANY’s 10/19 blog post at www.hcfany.org

In addition, our colleagues from local affiliates of Physicians for a National Health Program and the National Physicians Alliance have formed a medical presence in Zuccotti Park to provide first aid and some basic medical services. If you’re a health care professional and would like to contribute, feel free to contact them.

For those of you who haven’t yet visited Zuccotti Park / Liberty Sq (on Broadway adjacent to the WTC site, 2 blocks north of Wall St.), we urge you to do so to observe the various events and activities, and also spend a bit of time just talking to some of the “occupiers” and other participants. Their group process of “consensus-driven, leaderless, participatory democracy” is quite fascinating …and it works! Their General Assembly meeting takes place each evening from 7-9 p.m. – definitely stop by to check it all out!

HERE’S HOW YOU CAN TAKE ACTION THIS WEEK:

We want to invite and urge your participation in the a “March Against the Health Insurance Industry” action taking place this Wed. afternoon, 10/26 that is being spearheaded by Health Care for the 99%:

4 p.m. – Gather outside 1 Liberty Plaza (just north of Zuccotti Park) for a “Speakout by the 99%”, where people will tell their own personal stories about health insurance industry abuse. FYI: the NYC offices of Wellpoint, one of our nation’s largest insurance companies, is in this building. Wellpoint is a company that has bought up formerly-non-profit Blue Cross plans once they converted to for-profit.
4:30 p.m. – March to 110 5 Ave. (16 St., near Union Sq.)
5:30 p.m. – Rally outside the NYC offices of WellCare, a national Tampa-based firm that provides managed care services and prescription drug plans to public insurance programs like Medicare and Medicaid, including Medicaid, Child Health Plus, and Family Health Plus here in NY.
6 pm – Rally outside the former site of St. Vincent’s Hospital, 7 Ave. & 12 St.

Finally, to get involved with Health Care for the 99%, send an email to owshealthcare@gmail.com, or checkout http://www.owshealthcare.wordpress.com

See you on Wed. afternoon!
