Minn. man rides through Poconos on wheelchair to honor war veterans
October 03, 2007
A Minneapolis man on a mission to raise money and awareness for American war veterans made a stop in Mount Pocono and left the area Tuesday on the way to New York City.
On Monday, 49-year-old Robert VanVranken II marked the start of his fourth month on the road during his mission to drive his electric wheelchair from his home in Minnesota to Manhattan.
"I just want people to be aware of our veterans," VanVranken said. "When you see a veteran or a soldier, you should shake their hand."
VanVranken lost his left leg when he was run over by a Twin Cities bus last November. He said his amputation made him appreciate the problems facing disabled veterans.
