Oct. 6, 2006 -- The 7th annual Nautica New York City Triathlon, presented by Toyota, jumps into the Hudson River Sunday, July 22 at 6:00 a.m. Over 3200 athletes are expected to compete in Manhattan’s premier Olympic distance triathlon.
Registration opens November 1 at 12:01 am at www.nyctri.com. Early entry is $160 for individuals and $210 for relay teams. The 2006 NYCTRI sold out in 14 weeks and organizers expect it will beat that date this year.

The race includes a 1500 meter swim in the Hudson River. The Hudson is the world’s fastest 1500 meter triathlon swim since athletes swim with a strong current. The course record is 9:38 seconds.

The 40k bike is on the Westside Highway underneath the George Washington Bridge along the Hudson River.

The run is thru midtown Manhattan cross72nd Street finishing with a loop of Central Park. Over 200,000 people watch the athletes along the Hudson and throughout Central Park.

Aussie’s Emma Snowsill and Greg Bennett took home top honors in 2006. Bennett and Snowsill earned valuable points in the Lifetime Fitness Triathlon Series.

The race also includes an elite age group competition for men and women. The top five qualify for the Lifetime Fitness Championships.

The Triathlon features the Central Park Underwear Run Saturday morning. This 1.7 mile run along Central Park’s lower loop will help raise money to buy hand cycles for disabled kids in New York. World marathon below the knee amp Amy Winters won the inaugural Central Park Underwear in purple togs.

The 2007 Nautica New York City Triathlon hosts the National PC Championships for the second year. The event drew 51 top athletes in 9 PC divisions last year and should top 70 athletes in 2007.

The race is televised regionally on WNBC and SNY in the tri-state area. Race highlights are also distributed worldwide.

The Nautica New York City Triathlon is one of the sport’s most geographically diverse races. Participants come from over 42 states and 20 countries to race New York. European demand is a rapidly growing sector for New York.
