Eger Foundation gala takes plans for first hospice residence one step closer to realization

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Eger Health Care and Rehabilitation Center and University Hospice, long-time partners in providing hospice care, will celebrate Staten Island's first hospice residence with a gala dinner-dance Nov. 8 in the Hilton Garden Inn, Bloomfield. Cocktail reception 6:30 p.m., to be followed by dinner, dancing and entertainment. Tickets are $200 per person, black-tie optional. Reservations contact Vienna Profeta at 718-989-3087.

The Eger Foundation is hosting the gala in support of the Hospice Residence which will be occupied by the University Hospice Program of Staten Island University Hospital - North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System. The evening's honorees will be Teddy Atlas, Dr. Vincent Calamia, Alexander Conti, and Richard and Lois Nicotra.

A native Islander who grew up on Grymes Hill, Theodore (Teddy) Atlas Jr. is the founder and administrator of the Dr. Theodore Atlas Foundation, created to honor his father's humanitarian legacy. The group's major fund-raiser, the Teddy Dinner, annually draws major names from the world of sports. The foundation has given more than $2 million to people in need.

Dr. Vincent Calamia is board certified in internal medicine, endoctrinology and geriatrics. He founded the geriatric department at Staten Island University Hospital, and is co-founder and president of University Physicians Group. He is also chief executive officer of Victory Memorial Hospital, Brooklyn.

Alexander Conti is a financial representative with Northwestern Mutual Financial Network. He is founder and chairman of the Worldwide Children's Foundation, which provides life-saving surgery to critically-ill children worldwide. He is also a community and civic activist who volunteers with many local organizations.

Richard and Lois Nicotra head the Nicotra Group and are the proprietors of the Hilton Garden Inn. Together the Todt Hill residents have been recognized for their philanthropy, charitable work and support of the arts as well as their efforts to bring new business to Staten Island.

Mr. Nicotra is also the founder of the not-for-profit organization The Bloomfield Conservancy. Through contributions, it maintains the Corporate Park in Bloomfield, and its surroundings.

Mrs. Nictotra is is involved in the strategic planning and design elements for the company's projects. She is also a vice president of The Bloomfield Conservancy. She is a Staten Island Advance Woman of Achievement.

Ron and Gail Purpora and John and Margo Catsimatidis are chairing the event.

Mr. Catsimatidis is chief executive officer of the Red Apple Group, owner of Gristede's Foods.

Mr. and Mrs. Purpora are residents of Todt Hill. Mr. Purpora is chief executive officer of ICAP Securities USA, Manhattan.

The hospice residence will include eight patient rooms. Hospice care will be provided by University Hospice, which is affiliated with Staten Island University Hospital. Currently an existing home in a quiet corner of the Eger property, it is in the process of being converted into a hospice residence that is designed to blend with the Eger campus as well as the residential neighborhood surrounding the residence.
