Standing in front of the World War I memorial in Madison Square Park yesterday, Senator Charles E. Schumer called on the Defense Department to investigate reports that veterans disabled by wounds suffered in combat had been asked to return part of their enlistment bonuses because they were unable to finish their terms of service. “It’s just a disgrace,” said Mr. Schumer, a Democrat. The number of affected veterans was not known, but Senator Schumer said his office had received several complaints. He cited the case of Jordan Fox, an Army sniper from Mount Lebanon, Pa., wounded by a roadside bomb in Iraq. According to Mr. Schumer, the Pentagon acknowledged that the return of $2,800 of the wounded veteran’s bonus had been demanded, but said that it was a clerical error and that the debt had been canceled.
