Job Opening: Housing Here and Now seeks Organizer

I hope PWDs will reply yo this job posting. Housing Here & Now has had a very spotty record of ensuring disability access to their community forums. Perhaps if they interview or even hire P{WDs it might raise their awareness of our community. It is interesting that thay state"HHN is an equal opportunity employer. People of color, women, GLBT individuals, and people on public assistance are strongly encouraged to apply" But PWDs are not mentioned. HUM! EMP

Hiring Lead Organizer
Housing Here and Now

Organization Description

Housing Here and Now is a 3 ½ year old citywide coalition that uses
direct action and grassroots organizing to win campaigns to preserve and
create affordable housing. Our current work involves a major effort to
strengthen rent laws at the state level. Past successes Include
agreements with multifamily lenders to ensure good repair in the
apartment buildings they mortgage; reform of a major developer tax break
program, 421a; and an inclusionary zoning provision to ensure
affordability in Greenpoint Williamsburg.

Housing Here and Now is a dynamic and fun coalition. Our core groups are
membership- based and are dedicated to waging successful campaigns with poor and working people in the lead. The diverse talents and resources of these member groups have been key to our success.

Job Description

Housing Here and Now seeks a lead organizer to advance our current
efforts, which include a campaign to strengthen the rent laws, reform
the state rent agency (Division of Housing and Community Renewal), and
hold problem NYC landlords accountable. The rent law campaign is our
biggest effort to date and our first major state effort.

We are looking for a skilled organizer preferably one with tenant
organizing experience --to assume significant responsibilities. This
will include working with the director to coordinate major actions,
including a thousand person rally in November; convening planning
meetings with member groups and organizing regular smaller events (press
conferences, meetings with elected officials, etc.) We expect the lead
organizer to do direct tenant association organizing as needed,
including door knocking buildings, and holding lobby meetings and one on
one meetings with grassroots leaders. The lead organizer will prep
leaders for events and designing and leading trainings on relevant issues. Organizer will also have opportunity to take the lead on a campaign to reform the Division of Housing and Community Renewal, the state rent agency.

In the past this position has had a research and writing component.
Previous staff have researched housing maintenance code enforcement,
rent regulation and multifamily lending and drafted reports to
complement the organizing work. Previous lead organizers have also
drafted fundraising proposals, attended grantee conferences and
organized site visits with potential funders as part of their role in HHN.

The position provides a unique opportunity for experienced organizers to
drive a major campaign, hone their skills and work closely with some of
the best organizing groups in the country.

Key elements of this position include the following:

Convene planning meetings: Bring together dozens of NYC organizing
groups to plot strategy and logistics for upcoming phase of vacancy
decontrol and DHCR campaigns.

Organize major actions: Secure mass turnout from several dozen HHN
groups, secure attendance of decision makers and targets, coordinate
logistics and conduct leadership preparation for major vacancy
decontrol repeal event in November

Conduct building organizing: Organize tenants associations in
buildings owned by target landlords.

Develop grassroots leaders: Meet with and prepare tenants to assume
roles at meetings, press conferences, and negotiation sessions.

Provide training to community members and organizers: develop and
conduct trainings for community leaders on Rent Laws, DHCR regulations
and organizing skills as necessary.

Qualifications
Prospective candidates should possess the following qualifications:

3 - 5 years of organizing experience in issue-based campaigns
Demonstrated commitment to grassroots organizing as a way to build power for poor and working people
The capacity to work with minimal supervision in a fast paced environment and also as part of a team
