A 71-year-old man was critically injured last night in the Bronx in a hit-and-run accident, and the driver of a van for disabled passengers was arrested, the police said.
The driver, identified as Lamont Weiters, 31, of the Bronx, was charged with assault and leaving the scene of an accident, the police said. The van he was driving hit the man just before 5 p.m. at East Tremont Avenue and Boston Road in the West Farms section of the Bronx, investigators said.
The victim, Juan Rodriguez, was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, where he remained in critical condition last night, the police said. The van, used in the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Access-a-Ride program, was found abandoned at 1200 Zerega Avenue. Investigators said they traced the van’s license plate number to an office where Mr. Weiters was taken into custody.
