STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- John Pfeiffer, 48, a longtime Staten Islander who co-owned and operated Staten Island's oldest medical supplies business in Castleton Corners, died yesterday in Richmond University Medical Center, West Brighton, after a two-week illness.

Mr. Pfeiffer owned and operated Charles Pfeiffer Surgical Supply on Victory Boulevard, along with his partner and cousin, Edward Salley. They took over the business from its founder, John's father, Charles Pfeiffer, in 2000. The elder Pfeiffer died in 2002. The store is currently in its 50th year of serving Staten Islanders.

Mr. Pfeiffer lived his entire life in Westerleigh and resided most recently on Deems Avenue.

"My father loved his family, he loved his dog and he loved serving people at the family business," commented his son, Daniel.

Mr. Pfeiffer was born in Brooklyn and was brought to the Island as an infant. He grew up in a 200-year-old house on Maine Avenue. As a teenager, his bedroom occupied the third floor of the house, which had once been servants' quarters for previous owners. The room's bookshelves were filled with science fiction books that he loved to read from a young age. As a teenager he loved to play backyard basketball games.

He graduated from Monsignor Farrell High School in 1978 and briefly attended The State University College at Geneseo before joining the family business full-time in 1980. He worked his way up, learning a variety of skills, from making braces to fixing wheelchairs to understanding the intricacies of computer medical billing. He watched many changes take place in the medical supply business and worked with his family members to keep the business current in a constantly changing industry.

Mr. Pfeiffer was a trained and certified orthotist who was an expert at making various braces.

"John treated the store like a family," commented his cousin Edward Salley. "He looked at its employees like members of his family and over the years some were. But he was always protective of their interests and the interests of our customers."

The business was originally located on Bay Street in the commercial district of Stapleton but moved to Castleton Corners in 1983 into what was formerly Cini Hardware.

When he was not working long hours at the family business, Mr. Pfeiffer liked to spend time with his children. His hobbies included caring for his dog, Zoe, a large white St. Bernard. He also loved to make and fly model gas-fired airplanes in an open area behind LaTourette Golf Course.

Surviving are two sons, Daniel and John; a daughter, Amanda; his mother, Helen, and two sisters, Mary Beth Miraldi and Helen Brehm.

The funeral service will be Thursday from the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton, with a service at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton.
