(East Meadow, Long Island) AP -- The New York State Division of Human Rights is investigating whether any laws were broken when a Long Island school district refused to allow a deaf student to bring his service dog to classes.

The state's Human Rights Law prohibits discrimination against anyone with a hearing disability because he or she uses a service dog.

Fourteen-year-old John Cave tried to bring his service dog, Simba, to class on Wednesday. But district officials barred the animal and called police.

District officials did not immediately comment on the inquiry.
