Wheelchair of homeless man lies on Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, after he was struck and killed by a car.
A homeless man in a wheelchair died Tuesday night after being struck by a car while crossing a busy Brooklyn street, police and witnesses said.
The unidentified victim, who was regularly seen panhandling for money on the side of the road, was crossing Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights against the light about 8:30 p.m., police and witnesses said.
He dodged two cars as he crossed but was hit by a gray Mazda heading east - and was thrown some 50 feet through the air.
"There was a boom. He flew off the windshield and up in the air," said witness Pauline Samuda, 45, of Crown Heights.
"His artificial leg flew off, and his wheelchair was smashed in the middle of the street."
The unidentified driver was arrested Tuesday night, but charges were pending, a police source said.
