NYSIE was started in 1831 as The New York Institute for the Blind, a residential vocational and occupational training facility for the completely blind and partially-sighted. It then became the New York Institute for the Education of the Blind, as it phased out the sheltered workshops and demanded high academic standards at the turn of the 19th century. As it became more common to mainstream blind children in the public schools during the 20th century, the Institute started to accept the multi-handicapped blind, and changed its name to the New York Institute for Special Education in 1986 as it changed focus to accept children in the residential setting with learning and emotional disabilities who were not blind. It now offers prospective students day or residential programs: the Schermerhorn Program for the blind & visually-impaired, the Van Cleve Program for children with learning or emotional difficulties, and the Readiness Program preschool for 3-5 year olds with disabilities/delay
