St. Joseph's School for the Deaf was founded in 1869 in Fordham, New York by the Society of the Daughter's of the Heart of Mary. Branch schools were opened soon after in Brooklyn and later in the East Bronx. The Bronx site eventually became St. Joseph's permanent home. Originally a residential school, St. Joseph's elected to become strictly a day school in the 1950's and remains open today. The unique educational program at St. Joseph's encourages the growth and development of the whole child. Particular emphasis is placed in the strengthening of communication skills in a context that nurtures each child to enable the development of strong self-concept, a love of learning and healthy personality. St. Joseph's serves deaf children from infancy to fourteen years of age in a total communication environment. Ancillary staff and consultants assist in identifying and prescribing effective educational programs to meet all the needs of our students.
