Habitat for Humanity New York City transforms lives and our city by uniting all New Yorkers around the cause of decent, affordable housing for everyone.

Founded in 1984 as an independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, Habitat–NYC builds in four boroughs: the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens. We complete about 25 houses a year. We build the homes with the "sweat equity" of our family partner homeowners who work side-by-side with volunteers. Professional contractors build the exterior shells to code, and the volunteers do the interior construction. Each year, more than 10,000 New Yorkers from faith institutions, corporations, schools and civic groups come to build with us and learn more about how to help solve New York's affordable housing crisis.

The Center for Urban Community Services (CUCS) is widely recognized as a leader in the development and advancement of practical, compassionate solutions for homeless people, particularly those with serious and persistent mental illnesses. Founded in 1979 at Columbia University, CUCS is a national non-profit organization based in New York City that provides a continuum of housing and services for homeless, disabled, at risk and low-income people.
Early on, CUCS had a simple purpose: involve Columbia University graduate students in the needs of disenfranchised and poor individuals who were mostly invisible to the city at large. Enthusiasm, optimism and idealism pervaded our work, and Morningside Heights was the laboratory. But the organization evolved quickly with the emergence of homelessness in a city ill-prepared for the crisis. CUCS expanded its mission and purpose to respond to the overwhelming need.

The Advocate's Office is a systems advocacy agency. Our Information and Referral (I&R) service can provide information and technical assistance and direct you to a provider in your geographic area that may be able to further assist you with your request. These community resources may have specific information that we do not have such as lists of accessible housing or locations or specific medical service providers. Although our agency does not operate a prescription coverage program, we can provide a list of programs for which you may be eligible. The agency has access to a wealth of information on the local, state and national level which may provide the exact information and assistance to meet your needs.
The agency's information and referral database, SATIRN V, is available on line at www.oapwd.org/satirn . Anyone who has access to the web can search for information as well. SATIRN is regularly being refined and updated.
