Description: The Center for Urban Community Services (CUCS) is widely recognized as a leader in the development and advancement of practical, compassionate solutions for homeless people, particularly those with serious and persistent mental illnesses. Founded in 1979 at Columbia University, CUCS is a national non-profit organization based in New York City that provides a continuum of housing and services for homeless, disabled, at risk and low-income people.
Early on, CUCS had a simple purpose: involve Columbia University graduate students in the needs of disenfranchised and poor individuals who were mostly invisible to the city at large. Enthusiasm, optimism and idealism pervaded our work, and Morningside Heights was the laboratory. But the organization evolved quickly with the emergence of homelessness in a city ill-prepared for the crisis. CUCS expanded its mission and purpose to respond to the overwhelming need.
